Now, here’s your friendly nudge to go grab that frozen bird out of the freezer and give it a VIP spot in the fridge. Trust me, you don’t want to rush this part, and your taste buds will thank you later. Here's a little cheat sheet to make sure your turkey has all the time it needs to get thawed, safe, and ready for the big day.

According to the USDA, turkeys at room temperature turn into a bacteria playground faster than we can say "gravy." So thawing your turkey in the fridge is the safest bet.

How Long Does it Take to Defrost a Frozen Turkey?

Here’s the magic formula: about 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds, with the fridge set at 40°F or below.

  • 4 to 12 pounds: 1 to 3 days
  • 12 to 16 pounds: 3 to 4 days
  • 16 to 20 pounds: 4 to 5 days
  • 20 to 24 pounds: 5 to 6 days

Once thawed, your turkey can hang out in the fridge for an extra day or two before it’s go-time. So, give that bird the time it deserves—after all, it’s about to be the star of the show! Happy Thanksgiving prepping!
